GETTING ORGANIZED FOR NEW BABY: PROS AND CONS OF FORMULA-FEEDING
Pros
- Provides adequate infant nutrition when mother's milk is unavailable.
- Can be fed to baby by anyone without mom's involvement.
Cons
- Is nutritionally inferior to breast milk. Today's formula is still missing about a hundred nutritional components found in breast milk.
- Provides no antibodies.
- Can't be guaranteed safe. Contamination may occur at the manufacturing plant, in the bottles, and on the nipples.
- Can be time consuming and inconvenient. Sterilizing and toting bottles and preparing and heating formula takes a lot of planning and time.
- Raises baby's risk of illness. For every seventy-seven breastfed babies needing medical care for illness, one thousand formula-fed babies require such care.
- Is expensive. The average American family spends nearly three thousand dollars per year to formula-feed a baby. This amount includes the cost of the formula, bottles, nipples, and expected medical visits to care for illnesses.
- Doesn't help the mother's postpartum physical recovery.
- Doesn't promote mother-child bond as effectively as breastfeeding.
